States of Jersey Police

 Police officers

Policing in Jersey provides a structured career in a disciplined service which offers opportunity, variety, training and job satisfaction with the common aim of 'Making Jersey Safer'.

The States of Jersey Police currently employs approximately 240 police officers who work on uniformed patrol or in departments such as Licensing, Community Policing, Criminal Investigation, Drugs, Intelligence, Special Branch and the Joint Financial Crimes Unit.

New recruits

We periodically recruit trainee police officers. To be eligible to apply you must:

  • have residential qualifications or have lived in Jersey for at least the previous 3 consecutive years
  • be aged 18 or over
  • be physically fit with good eyesight
  • be numerate and literate

You will start with a salary of £32,453 per year which, after completing your initial training period, will increase to £34,177 per year. After you've completed a 2 year probationary period, this will increase to £43,496 per year. (These figures are based on the 2011 police pay scales.)

The recruitment process begins with an advert (see the 'current vacancies' page for details). You should read through the police officer information pack (see link on left) and submit an application form. A shortlisting process will then take place, followed by the PIR exam, extended assessment day, fitness test and finally security, medical and references clearances. Full details of all these stages are provided in the police officer information pack - you can download this from the 'police officer information pack' page on the left.

Successful applicants will either be offered a contract of an employment with an official start date, or they will be invited to join the recruitment pool. Once sufficient vacancies exist within the States of Jersey Police, applicants will be selected from this recruitment pool and be offered a contract of an employment with an official start date.

Whilst the expectation is that all applicants within the recruitment pool should start within 12 months of completing the selection process, if you have not joined the States of Jersey Police within 18 months of successfully completing the selection process, then you will have to reapply to become a police officer.

On joining the States of Jersey Police you will undertake an intensive training programme which includes learning about aspects of local law, which differs from UK law, dealing with the public in all situations and learning about other agencies we work with. After successful completion of the 2 year probationary training period, your appointment as a police officer is confirmed and you will continue to work on uniformed patrol. However, at this stage you can apply for positions in departments such as the Criminal Investigation Department, Criminal Justice Department, Training or Firearms, as and when they arise, and as your career develops you can apply for promotion to higher ranks.

Transferees

The States of Jersey Police is not a Home Office force and as such we are not able to accept transferees.

In order for serving police officers to be employed by the States of Jersey Police, you must either have residential qualifications or have been continuously resident in Jersey for the previous consecutive 3 years. However, sometimes we are unable to fill our vacancies with local people and as such, we advertise the post without the need to meet this criteria. Please note however, that this is usually for very specialist posts.

If you are a current serving police officer and you meet the residency criteria through marriage or civil partnership, please contact Human Resources on +44 (0) 1534 612360 or email us.
