Learn about our recent performance in all areas of the work we do to Make Jersey Safer.
In 2010
4,554 crimes were committed in Jersey. This equates to 49 crimes per 1,000 population.
In the 2010 Jersey Annual Social Survey, 9 out of 10 adults considered their neighbourhood to be very or fairly safe.
As the main residential and business hub of the Island, with a large transient population and thriving night time economy, St Helier accounts for nearly two-thirds of the recorded crime in the Island.
Less than 2 crimes per week were recorded in 7 of Jersey’s 12 parishes. This overall profile has remained largely unchanged for several years.
34% of crime resulted in an offender being charged for court or reported to a parish hall enquiry
First 6 months of 2011
Crime in Jersey has fallen to its lowest level in the last 10 years.
Just under 1,600 crimes were recorded in the first five months of 2011. This is 11% fewer than the same period last year and nearly a third less than in 2004.
The reductions are not confined to any particular type of offending. Acquisitive crime is down by 6% and criminal damage has reduced by 12%. Most notably, however, violent crime is down by 20%.
The reduction in violent crime is supported by the lowest number of attendances at A&E with assault injuries in the last 10 years. These figures are 11% down compared to the same period last year and 37% down compared to the peak year of 2005.
The reductions are particularly evident in the night time economy of St Helier, where stranger assaults have fallen from 86 in the first five months of 2010 to 61 in 2011. Overall, the number of assaults committed at night in the streets, pubs and clubs of St Helier is 18% down compared to the same period in 2010 (142 v 117).
