Welcome to the official website of the States of Jersey Police.
Jersey is, on the whole, a small peaceful Island where people enjoy a low crime rate, coupled with a high detection rate and a good quality of life. However, this does not mean there are not challenges to be faced as we strive to provide the highest level of service to Islanders that we can.
The challenge of providing high quality, comprehensive policing services for the people of Jersey should not be underestimated. The safety, security and quality of life of our community is dependent on our ability to deal effectively with the entire range of criminal and anti-social behaviour. In any typical week, States of Jersey Police will be investigating serious offences, combating financial crime, disrupting the supply of ‘Class A’ drugs and targeting the most persistent offenders who threaten our community.
In that same week, we will simultaneously maintain a visible patrol presence to reassure the public, respond to around 500 calls for assistance and deal with over 60 motor traffic offences. Behind the scenes, our Police Custody Suite will deal with over 100 suspects each week and paperwork will be prepared for over 100 prosecution cases. Over and above these demands, we will be actively identifying issues of concern and working with local communities and partner agencies to develop the solutions that help make Jersey such a safe place to live.
Achieving the right balance in deploying our resources against all these competing demands is the key to the successful policing of Jersey.
We have continued to listen to public feedback on the delivery of policing in the Island, as well as giving emphasis to the Home Affairs department remit and wider States of Jersey strategy. We strive to draw together the resource decisions, prevention and enforcement priorities and the intelligence requirements which are key to modern policing.
While the police service must always take the lead responsibility on issues of crime and disorder it is now widely recognised that many of these issues respond best to a “joined up” government solution. Under the existing committee system such a corporate approach has often been hard to achieve. We continue to seek active dialogue with government in an effort to develop solutions which involve not only the Police but all of the assets of the public sector.
By realising the potential of police, government and the voluntary sector we will be in an even stronger position to “Make Jersey Safer”.
Thank you for your browsing our website. We would welcome your feedback and suggestions on how to improve it.
