Domestic violence continues to be an area of work of high priority to States of Jersey Police.
In 2006 the Public Protection Unit in the Force ran a campaign with other agencies such as the Women’s Refuge in Jersey using the theme ‘Is your home a prison without bars' while this year's theme was that no matter where it happens, domestic absue is still a crime.
This high profile campaign was supported by a media launch, radio advertising and a poster exhibition at The Welcome Centre in St Helier which featured posters about domestic abuse from all over the world. The TV campaign included a high profile advert about mental and emotional abuse.
In 2006, 239 domestic related assaults were reported to the Police.
The Force’s dedicated Family Protection Team works hard in this area to encourage women and men who suffer domestic abuse to come forward. It is true that women will suffer abuse many times at the hands of a perpetrator before they find the courage to come forward.
Campaigns such as the Domestic Violence campaign, run with partners such as the Women's Refuge, seek to remind all Islanders that domestic violence is an issue in Jersey but that there are ways to prevent it. Women who are suffering domestic abuse are always encouraged to come forward and seek help.
Anyone who wishes to speak to a member of the Family Protection Team can call the team on 612240.
