Jersey is generally thought to be a safe place to live, but States of Jersey Police run a popular initiative each year which allows women the opportunity to own a personal attack alarm.
With funding from local groups such as People Against Crime, the crime reduction department of States of Jersey Police is able to hand out personal alarms to women in St Helier during the Autumn and Winter. The alarms, when activated, emit a piercing sound which alerts passers by and can make a potential attacker think twice.
The initiative means that more that many women in Jersey now have a personal alarm. At the same time, information is given out about personal safety, with an input from organisations such as the Lucie Blackman Trust and Victim Support.
Our most recent 'personal alarm giveaway' held in King Street on 21st November 2007 meant that 1,000 more women now own a personal alarm. The parish halls are also fully stocked with alarms which are free for anyone who wants to pick one up. There is also a supply at the Police Headquarters enquiry desk.
