Incident Involving Suspicious Package – St. Aubin
RELEASED TO MEDIA ON MONDAY 14 DECEMBER AT 9:00 AM
States of Jersey Police can confirm that, following an alert from a member of the public at about 09:45 a.m. on Sunday 13th December, 2009, regarding a package that had been left propped against the door of the Police Sub-Station at St. Brelade’s Parish Hall, St. Aubin, members of both the States Police and Honorary Police from the western parishes were deployed in securing the area around the Parish Hall which also necessitated the evacuation of members of the public to a safe area. This also included the closure of several roads in the area to ensure public safety.
The Island Bomb Disposal Officer was called to the scene and following an examination of the item a controlled explosion was carried out in respect of the suspect package.
The package was found to contain items that had been deliberately devised to mimic an explosive device.
It is stressed that at no time, inclusive of the controlled explosion, were any persons put in danger. Nevertheless this matter is being treated as a serious incident which also caused the public and residents of St. Aubin unnecessary distress.
CID officers are currently undertaking enquiries to identify the person(s) responsible for placing the package against the door which is located in a recessed part of the building facing the harbour and would like to hear from anyone who may have information which would lead to the identity of the perpetrator(s) of this totally irresponsible and reckless act.
CID can be contacted on 612200 or information ca be given anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
