Busy holiday period for SoJP

Tuesday 29 December 2009

RELEASED TO MEDIA AT 9:50 AM ON TUESDAY 29 DECEMBER 2009

THE Christmas period was a busy but steady time for the States of Jersey Police with a total of 33 people brought into custody for a variety of offences between mid day on Christmas Eve and 8 am this morning (Tuesday 29 December).

As a consequence of Police enquiries, 9 people have been charged with offences, and 8 warned to attend parish hall enquiries for disorder related offences.

10 people were arrested for various assaults, most of which were common assaults, though 2 were for Grave and Criminal assaults resulting in relatively minor injuries.

There were 9 traffic related arrests, which included offences such as hit and run and alleged drink driving offences.

Officers also responded to calls of vehicles having been damaged; it was found that there were a total of 6 cars damaged in the Chevalier Road/Gas Place area on Christmas night.

Speaking about the Christmas period, Insp Lee Turner commented: ‘This was a busy but steady time for the States of Jersey Police, who dealt with a variety of offences between Christmas Eve and the end of the Bank Holiday. Police responded quickly to a large variety of calls and incidents, and where appropriate, people were arrested and dealt with firmly.

‘As the New Year comes around, we would repeat our message that we will deal robustly with people whose behaviour and actions cause upset and distress to others. This includes everything from drink driving to common assaults and street disorder. It is our intention to do our utmost to ensure that people’s quality of life is not adversely affected by the actions of others.’

Acting Chief Officer David Warcup added: ‘It is pleasing that where necessary, people are being arrested and charged. We have a commitment to Islanders to keep them safe and to deal firmly with people who do break the law. I would like to add my thanks to the officers who worked hard over the Christmas period to keep Jersey safe, who responded to calls from Islanders, and attended incidents.’
