Malicious damage in St Saviour

Tuesday 23 June 2009

RELEASED TO MEDIA AT 17:10 PM ON TUESDAY 23 JUNE 2009

THE States of Jersey Police are appealing for information from the public following a series of cars being maliciously damaged in the Bagatelle Lane area over night on Monday 22 June. In some cases, valuables were stolen from the vehicles. Police are treating all the incidents as linked.

A property was also broken into in the area though nothing was stolen.

A 16 year old youth was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning in connection with the crashed car, and is helping Police with their enquiries.

The cars damaged included:

  • A red Mazda MX5 which was later found crashed in Gloucester Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The car had been left with the keys in the ignition.

  • A silver Audi A6 Avant which had panels extensively ‘keyed’. The car’s log book was also stolen.
  • A yellow Renault Megane, which was left unlocked, was opened and searched. Papers from within the car were found nearby, as well as a pair of sunglasses.

  • A green MG Midget, which was locked, had its soft top slashed

All these incidents are now being dealt with by the pro-active investigation team at the States of Jersey Police.

Det con Bruce Liron, crime reduction officer, said: ‘We again urge everyone to lock and secure their cars, and not to leave valuables inside them. Locking your car is a very basic security measure and one which should be remembered even if you believe you live somewhere extremely safe or isolated. Don’t provide an opportunity for a thief by sparing a few seconds to lock your car.’

Insp Alan Guy, head of the Pro-Active investigation team added: ‘We are very keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the Bagatelle Lane area on Monday night. If you have not already called us with information, please do so on 612612 or let us have information anonymously on 0800 555 111.’

Det con Bruce Liron is available to speak to the media on Wednesday 24 June in the morning. Please call him direct on 612345.
