Alleged serious sexual assault in St Helier

Tuesday 13 October 2009

THE States of Jersey Police have commenced an investigation into a complaint of a serious sexual assault that is alleged to have occurred at approximately one o’clock this morning in the area of Overdale Hospital, Westmount Road St Helier.

The 19 year old complainant was approached from behind after she had walked through town from her workplace at the Waterfront, climbed the steps close to the bowling green on Westmount Hill and had turned right at the top towards the Crematorium. She was then taken to a nearby field where she was allegedly sexually assaulted. It is not known at this time where the attacker came from or the direction he left after the assault.

The victim is described as 5’6” tall, of proportionate build, mid blond hair in a ponytail and was wearing a white zip-up hoody, black trousers and a black t-shirt. She was also wearing black trainers with a silver stripe across the heel.

The suspect is described as a man without any particular accent and may have been a dark coloured hoody and jeans. No other description is known at this time.

The Police would like to talk to anyone who may have seen either of these two people anywhere in the town area last night and in particular anyone who was in the area of Westmount Road in the early hours of this morning irrespective of whether or not they believe they have seen anything suspicious.

In appealing for witnesses, the States of Jersey Police continue to reassure the public that an assault of this nature is still very rare in the Island, and that the full resources of the organisation will be employed to ensure that this matter is fully investigated. Specially trained officers have been deployed since the allegation was brought to the attention of the police and every effort will be made to ensure that the offender is caught.

The States of Jersey Police request the assistance of anyone who has any information in relation to this event, and in particular and as mentioned earlier, ANYONE who was in the area of Westmount Road around this time to come forward. This information can either be taken directly to the CID department at Police Headquarters or alternatively to Crimestoppers in confidence.
