Furze fire in St Aubin - witness appeal

Monday 14 September 2009

Media Release

Fire St Aubin - Sunday Night
Emergency Services responded to a furze fire at approximately 19.45 hours last night (Sunday 13th September 2009) in St Aubin at the bottom of the southerly end of the Railway Walk. Fire and Rescue Service, Paramedics, States and Honorary Police were all deployed to the area and a cordon was established around the location of the Fire. There was an initial requirement for houses on Mont Les Vaux to be evacuated and all persons were relocated to St Brelade Parish Hall for an interim period.
The cause of the fire at this time is unknown. There have been no reports of injuries nor damage to any premises as a result of this incident and it is believed that the extent of the fire is limited to a large portion of the headland running adjacent to the Railway Walk on the Western side.
Road closures were put in place with Mont Le Vaux reopening just before two o’clock with further roads reopened later this morning. The lower section of the Railway Walk near St Aubin remains cordoned off pending fire scene examination later this morning.

Our aim now, is to determine the cause of the fire. A co-ordinated Police and Fire investigation operation will now start to assess the cause. Fire Service Investigators, Police Scenes of Crime Officers will revisit the site this morning. Investigations remain ongoing and it is emphasised that this is a standard joint operating procedure after a major fire. The Police would like to hear from anyone who may have any information to offer on 612612, or anonymously via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
