Steady night for NYE Policing

DFriday 01 January 2010

RELEASED TO MEDIA ON 01 JANUARY 2010 AT 05:20 AM

                     NEW YEAR’S EVE POLICING

Police reported a steady night, but overall people were well behaved when it came to bringing in the New Year. There were very few incidents of note across the Island and officers were impressed with the overall behaviour of the public.

Nine persons were arrested over night (between 1800hrs and 0500hrs) the majority involving instances of public disorder related offences.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, 2 of which were involved in collisions. Fortunately on both occasions they were the only vehicles involved one hitting a wall, the other colliding with the pavement and no one was injured.

Five people were arrested for being drunk and disorderly or other drink related offences

Following a call from a concerned member of the public a young male was arrested in the area of Hansford Lane in possession of a baseball bat.

It is disappointing that some are still failing to get the anti drink drive message and we would like to reiterate that if you drink and drive you put yourself and others at risk and ultimately you will be caught and face prosecution.

Inspector Alan Williamson said that last night’s policing operation was indicative that having officers available in sufficient numbers ensures that any potential problems are nipped in the bud and not allowed to escalate. This minimises disorder on the streets, contributes significantly to a low number of arrests and ensures that the majority enjoy a safe and peaceful night.

Overall the police were pleased with the manner the public went about heralding in the New Year and would like to wish everyone a safe and happy 2010.

Note: Police Inspector Andy Bisson commences duty at 0700hrs and will be available to provide any update should any significant overnight incident(s) come to light.

Happy New Year to all our colleagues in the media from all at SoJP
